Joris Roelofs – basklarinet, Han Bennink – drums
Klarinettist Joris Roelofs begon als bebopper maar heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een echte experimentator die voortbouwt op de muziek van de legendarische Nederlandse Instant Composers Pool (ICP). Met drummer Han Bennink, een van de oprichters van de ICP, vormt hij al lange tijd een bijzonder duo waarin traditie en vernieuwing elkaar ontmoeten.
Op hun album Icarus staan uitvoeringen van Eric Dolphy’s ‘Something Sweet, Something Tender’, Kurt Weils ‘This Is New’ en Charlie Hadens ‘Song for Ché’ naast spontane composities en miniaturen in ICP-stijl. Geïnspireerd door grootmeesters als Eric Dolphy en Harry Sparnaay heeft Joris Roelofs op de basklarinet een eigen stijl ontwikkeld, met een prachtige toon die lang doorklinkt. Han Bennink combineert ouderwets swingende passages met vrij spel waarin de mogelijkheden van het drumstel ten volle worden benut. Samen staan ze garant voor een unieke avond vol opwindende jazz!

Clarinetist Joris Roelofs started out as a bebopper but has developed into a true experimenter, building on the music of the legendary Dutch Instant Composers Pool (ICP). With drummer Han Bennink, a founding member of the ICP, he has long formed an extraordinary duo in which tradition meets innovation.
Their album Icarus features performances of Eric Dolphy’s ‘Something Sweet, Something Tender’, Kurt Weils’s ‘This Is New’ and Charlie Haden’s ‘Song for Ché’, as well as spontaneous ICP-style compositions and miniatures. Inspired by grandmasters like Eric Dolphy and Harry Sparnaay, Joris Roelofs has developed his own style on the bass clarinet, with a beautiful tone that resonates for a long time. Han Bennink combines old-fashioned swinging passages with free playing that fully exploit the possibilities of the drum kit. Together, they guarantee a unique evening of exciting jazz!
